Focus: Unreal Engine 5 Rendering, Materials & Art Tech


Location: Remote

Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience & Skills


Role Description


We're looking for a Technical Artist with strong experience in rendering, materials, and shaders, supporting both characters and environment content within the Unreal 5 engine. This role partners closely with art, design, and engineering to help define scalable visual standards while maintaining performance and workflow efficiency.


Responsibilities


  • Develop and maintain material and shader solutions used across characters and environments
  • Contribute to character rendering quality, including work on skin materials and shading, eye materials and rendering, and hair materials and shader setups.
  • Support broader rendering and tech art needs, including lighting and material workflows, optimization and performance profiling, and tooling and pipeline improvements for artists.
  • Collaborate with engineering to integrate and refine rendering features in Unreal Engine
  • Help diagnose and resolve visual or performance issues related to rendering and materials
  • Provide technical guidance to artists to ensure consistent, performant asset implementation

Our Ideal Candidate…


  • 3+ years of professional experience as a Technical Artist or similar role in game development
  • Strong hands-on experience working in Unreal Engine 5
  • Solid understanding of eye shading, material layering, character hair solutions, and subsurface scattering workflows
  • Comfortable balancing visual quality with performance and production realities
  • Enjoys collaborating across art, design, and engineering disciplines
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical teammates
  • Experience contributing to at least one shipped game title

Bonus Points For…


  • Rigging, skinning, or animation pipeline experience
  • Experience with shader optimization and performance profiling
  • Familiarity with DCC tools such as Maya, Blender, or Substance
  • Experience supporting live games or post-launch optimization
